A Korean Odyssey / Hwayugi

A little kid is bullied openly and yet keeps a straight face as the teacher enters and asks all the students to get up and greet her. She stands up alone while the others call out on her. (Here, I was like ‘ok fine, those kids are just pointing out the fact that the kid, Jin Seon Mi, is just a teacher’s pet.’) But then the teacher......

(Did I mention I was watching it at 3 am?)

And the 9-year-old kid’s only defence is a yellow umbrella, only a stone-hearted person will not feel something for the poor kid. And if you still haven’t fallen in love, then you are bound to be hooked to this drama for 25 hours - spread across 11 weeks - at the interaction between Jin Seon Mi as a kid and Son Oh Gong. Him trying to manipulate her into freeing him and when he breaks the promise while saying, ‘Sugi halke. Da thwaegi dappunnumiya.’ (I’ll introduce myself. I am an extremely bad person.)

And that worst person will become her protector 25 years later when they meet again (protecting her and loving her <3).
This particular drama revolves around a woman, Jin Seon Mi, who as a child made a contract with the Great Sage, Son Oh Gong, at the time when he was imprisoned by the heavens at the Five Marble Mountains. The contract is about protecting Jin Seon Mi from the demons she is able to see that ordinary human beings cannot. The thing that makes her extraordinary is the Sam Jang blood that she carries in her veins. Sam Jang must protect the world from the ultimate evils that the world would be subjected to. Previous Sam Jangs have done the same. It is her turn now. Unaware of this quality, Son Oh Gong promises to protect her, and as soon as he is released from the prison he uses the fault in the contract which makes Jin Seon Mi forget his name, and as a result, she is never able to call upon him for protection.
Fast forward 25 years they meet at a particular road intersection, and the two recognise each other in the first glance (Isn't that just pure romantic?). The story unfolds in such a way that Ma Wang (the devil King),

 Son Oh Gong,

Bu Ja - the zombie - (ikr),

Jin Seon Mi (the extraordinary human),

Secretary Ma (Dog demon),

 Pal Gye (Pig Demon),

and numerous other demons become a tight-knit group, helping Jin Seon Mi out in defeating evil spirits alternatively. And Son Oh Gong is tamed by Geumganggo (a bracelet) placed on his hands by Jin Seon Mi forcing him to fall in love with her.
Sometimes they would be defeating a social media evil spirit or at times a glutton evil spirit. And everyone in the group including Son Oh Gong who will ultimately fall in love with her has to resist the urge of eating her because that would make her predator VERY POWERFUL.
As the story unfolds and Bu Ja gets possessed by a 1000-year-old shaman and starts helping the evil human responsible for killing Bu Ja in the first place it is revealed that all was pre-planned. Jin Seon Mi is supposed to deal with the evilness ensued by the evil human in the world with the help of evil beings by becoming the container of all the evil which can then be removed from this world when the protector of Sam Jang ultimately kills Sam Jang with a sword made for this very purpose. (That's just plain cruel Man). What they did not count on was Son Oh Gong having fallen madly in love with her (for real) and that all the demons that were supposed to hate him becoming his and Sam Jang/Jin Seon Mi’s friends.
At every instant, it has been shown that the heavens have meticulously planned everything. But this, I know, would be an end that heavens would not be expecting. For them all would have been well for Son Oh Gong would have killed Jin Seon Mi, his feelings would disappear for her alongside the Geumganggo so he wouldn’t feel pain. But the story has taken an unexpected turn. Son Oh Gong has decided to take matters into his own hands and come face to face with the evilest human, Kang Dae Sung, himself. Without any clue as to what will happen next, we are left at the edge of our seats.

Or was that pre-planned too? We will have to find out the extent of heavens’ mysteriousness in the final episodes.
I hate suspense, and I am also Lovin' it! <3
Je suis waiting!

P.S I am going to dedicate an entire post to it's Oh So Beautiful Songs <3

  1. This has been giving me nightmares but I love it! The bromance between Oh Gong and Ma Wang is so amazing, they've actually started getting along! What do you think?

    2. They did but they were always pulling each other's leg which is why now that they are being overtly caring, it is so endearing!
